Beef Heart

Beef Heart is a valuable source of many heart-healthy essential nutrients. Beef Heart is also a valuable source of many nutrients/compounds that aren't considered essential for dogs, namely Taurine and CoQ10. CoQ10 is a small vitamin-like compound that plays an important role in energy production. Decreased levels of CoQ10 have been found in the myocardial tissue of dogs, humans and other animal models of heart disease, which is why it's a common therapeutic target.


While the benefits of beetroot supplementation in dogs haven't been evaluated, multiple human and animal studies have pointed towards a positive impact due to the dietary nitrates, betalains, and betaine found in beets. The betalains found in beets are relatively uncommon in nature, as the red you see is typically a result of either carotenoids or flavonoids.  


Lingonberry a close relative of cranberry is a valuable source of both Resveratrol and Quercetin, both of which have been shown to increase beta-oxidation in other animal models. While normally, when you see the word oxidation, it doesn't mean anything thing good. Beta oxidation, however, is how the body actually breaks down fatty acids to be used for energy.


Krill is a wonderful source of omega-3 fatty acids, namely EPA and DHA. What separates Krill from other sources of EPA and DHA is that it a much of it is delivered as phospholipids instead of triglycerides or in the case of fish oil ethyl ester, this allows for the EPA and DHA to be more bioavailable as it can more readily pass through the cell membrane. Krill is also a source of astaxanthin which is a keto-carotenoid responsible for the red color seen in many marine species such as salmon. Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant, which research has shown can improve antioxidant status in addition to improving lipid metabolism.
